Home ownership is a goal of many individuals. However, sometimes this goal is not immediately attainable. In other cases, a single-family home may not be the right choice for the individual. In these cases, a townhome is a great option. If you are on the fence about whether you should purchase a single-family home or a townhome, the following four benefits of townhomes may help you make your decision.

Maintenance Costs

With a single-family home, you are responsible for all maintenance and upkeep costs. With a townhome, many of these costs are covered by the homeowner's association. Things such as lawn care, snow removal, landscaping, trash service, and home security may be taken care of for you, so you don't have to worry about these costs or scheduling the appropriate services to keep up with your home's care and maintenance needs.

Labor

If you don't have the skills or desire to do maintenance and upkeep chores on your home, a single-family home is likely not the best choice. Again, with a townhome, the care and upkeep of the common areas, such as lawn mowing, pruning of trees and shrubs, leaf blowing and snow and ice removal will be handled for you. This relieves you of the burden of handling heavy manual labor or spending time outside in inclement weather taking care of these chores.

Neighbors

With a single-family home, it can be difficult to meet your neighbors and find people with common interests that you can spend time with. When you live in a townhome, your home is connected to at least one other home, with lots of other townhomes very close by. This type of close-knit construction of units will naturally cause neighbors to be in close proximity so they can chat and get to know one another. In addition, your homeowner's association will probably have a few get-togethers each year to introduce new neighbors and help the veterans of the townhome community mix and mingle.

Security

With a close-knit neighborhood where the housing units are in close proximity, you also get added security. Your neighbors are close and will be able to see your home and keep an eye out for vandals and intruders. You can repay the favor. If security is a major concern to you, consider one of the many gated townhome communities for added peace of mind that you will be safe in your home.
